Books (August 2019)

Happy Tuesday! It's my favorite post and link-up of the month! I read five books that I really enjoyed this month (some of them were recommendations from this link-up!). Here is Show Us Your Books with Steph and Jana. And here is what I read in August!

Last year I read One of Us Is Lying and really liked it so I decided to read Two Can Keep a Secret by the same author. I really liked this book too! This is a "Young Adult" book set in small-town USA where teenage twins (a boy and girl) return to live with their grandma. 17 years prior their mother's twin sister went missing and then 5 years before they moved another teenage girl went missing and was later found dead. As the twins arrive into town, a few more deaths take place and this book is from the perspective of the girl twin (Ellery) and then a friend whose brother has always been suspected in one of the murders. I enjoyed the mystery, the twists, and I was really kept guessing until the end.

Ok if you like thrillers and have not read The Silent Patient STOP what you are doing and order it or request it from your local library! This may just be my new favorite thriller. This book is about a famous painter (Alicia) who shoots her husband and then never speaks another word. Six (ish) years later a criminal psychotherapist gets the opportunity to work with Alicia and is determined to get her to talk. I wasn't sure how this book could possibly be that good when one of the main characters is not speaking BUT it is! When I got to the end and the final twist my jaw dropped!

This book takes place in a town in England which is home to money and a lot of secrets. One of the neighbors is murdered and the murderer could be anyone. This book is told from the perspectives of a 27 year old married woman who has a crush on one of the neighbors named Tom, the teenage son of Tom, and a teenage girl in town. Interviews from the investigation are also thrown in throughout the book. I found this book interesting. I was interested in "who did it" and the secrets they were all harboring.  I do have to say I figured out the killer and the ending of the book was so-so for me.  There was a twist at least for me because I thought a different person was murdered until I got to the murder scene at the end of the book and was like what?!? Anyone else read this and have a different murder victim in their head? Ha!

I read this book as part of my devotional and LOVED it! I was looking for a little motivation (I've kind of been in a rut lately) and this book was both encouraging and motivational for me. Author Lara Casey shares her story of surrendering her fear, taking a leap and making things happen. I loved reading her story and found a lot of things she said very applicable. This was encouraging to my faith and encouraging for me as a mom, wife, and someone who has started working again.

I love a good beach read and Mary Kay Andrews always delivers. Her books are a little longer but I always enjoy them. I really liked this book because it had a mystery thrown in. Drue Campbell finds herself out of a job and life doesn't seem to be getting any better when her estranged dad shows up at her mother's funeral and offers her a job. Drue accepts the job and moves her life (all while inheriting her grandparents beach cottage). As she begins work at her father's investigative law firm, she finds herself asking questions and investigating a suspicious death the law firm handled two years prior AND a case of a missing woman that is decades old.

What have you been reading lately?!

  1. Popping over from Show Us Your Books - and I'd totally agree that both Karen McManus books are great. I love mysteries and I love YA, and putting both of those things into one book was kind of my new favorite thing after having read One of Us Is Lying!

  3. I've seen The Silent Patient everywhere. I'll add it to my list!
I will say that, ridiculously, I've avoided even finding out what it's about because I hate the cover, but it sounds good.
I love Lisa Jewell but Watching You was not her best.

  7. I really enjoyed The Silent Patient too. And I'm so behind, One of Us is Lying has been on my TBR pretty much since it came out. I feel like I need to read it before Two Can Keep a Secret, even though it's not a continuation of the first book. :D
